U.S. History: Colonization through Today Course Description/Overview Junior-level United States History is divided into two sections, Colonization through The Impact of WWI (this class) and The 1920s to present. In both classes you will incorporate skills and strategies used by historians (see Exploring the Skills section below). In this section of the course you will be introduced to the foundation of American history by exploring the earliest reasons for settlement and how those struggles and successes laid the groundwork for what the United States has become. You will chronicle this founding up through the early 20th Century when the United States, in its continuing economic growth and subsequent internal social and economic conflict, entered and helped win WWI. This experience in WWI in turn helped shape both the domestic and foreign policies of America for years to come. It is important for you to become an active learner, engaging in every activity. History helps you understand the present and make sense of what is to come. Exploring the Skills and Strategies Underlying U.S. History I can. . . a. Apply terms relevant to the content appropriately and accurately b. Identify and interpret different types of primary and secondary sources of fundamental importance and relevance to topical inquiry and understanding c. Interpret timelines of key historical events, people, and periods; locate significant historical places and events on maps d. Analyze the importance of context and point of view in historical interpretation; recognize that historians interpret the same events differently due to personal values and societal norms e. Analyze and evaluate historical sources and interpretations f. Utilize research strategies, methods, and sources to obtain, organize, and interpret historical data g. Compose arguments/position papers, and participate in debates on different interpretations of historical events ; synthesize primary and secondary sources to justify position h. Compose an analytical, historical essay containing a thesis, supporting evidence, and a conclusion i.
