Activities: 

 Create an anchor chart on Theme.  Go over what theme is AND what it isn’t (students might confuse theme with the main idea).  

Read the mentor text with students.

Activities: 

 Revisit the anchor chart on theme vs. main idea.  

Re-read the mentor text on theme from Thursday. 

Divide a piece of chart paper in half into Plot (what happens) and Theme (big idea).  Put students into pairs, and give each pair two post-it notes.  On one post-it note, have students write what happens in the plot of the story.  On the other post-it note have students write what they think the theme of the story was.  Discuss whole group what the post-it notes say to come up with a consensus of the  theme of the story.
