Consider this class as your owner’s manual for being a citizen of the United States of America.  This nation “of the people, by the people, and for the people” belongs to you.  This gives you both rights and responsibilities.  Among those responsibilities is the duty to understand our democratic system of government and your role in it.  If you are a US citizen, you don’t need to pass any tests to vote or partake of any other privileges of being an American.  But taking this course will help you become a more responsible citizen!    We will focus on the themes of Law and Justice, examining the foundations of our government and legal system.

    • Morehead Arts and Eats Festival: We are one of the nonprofit recipients this year, so we need volunteers to help pass out information about our shelter, and help out with other general tasks for the event.

    • 4th Annual "A Place to Call Home" Pig Roast and Silent Auction Fundraiser: This is our annual joint fundraiser with DOVES of Gateway Domestic Violence Shelter. This is GHC's only fundraiser of the year, so it is a huge event for us. We need volunteers to help serve food, take tickets, clean up, etc.

    • Trick or Treat for the Homeless Food Drive: This is our annual food drive. On the 28th and 29th we will meet on the campus of MSU and split into groups. Each group is assigned a team leader and a street in Morehead. On Monday, October 28th, volunteers will put notices of a food collection on doors in neighborhoods throughout Morehead. On Tuesday, October 29th, volunteers will return to those same neighborhoods (in costumes) to collect the donated food. This is one of our favorite events! It is always so much fun!
    • Number of Volunteers: Unlimited

    Thursday, October 31st

    • Say Boo to Drugs: We participate in this event every year by setting up a booth and passing out candy and information about the services offered here at GHC.

    November 16th- 24th

    • National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week: This is a special week for us here at the shelter. Every year we have the mayor sign a proclamation recognizing this week in Morehead. If your students would like to host some type of event or food/hygiene drive that would be great.
