Welcome to Kindergarten





Kindergarten Registration is at the Rowan County Board of Education in the cafeteria on the following dates and times.

          Thursday, May 24th, 2:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

          Friday, July 20th, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.


Kindergarten Parent Orientations

       Clearfield Elementary:  August 7th, 5:00 p.m.

        McBrayer Elementary:  July 24th, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

        Rodburn Elementary:  August 2nd, 11:30 a.m., school library

        Tilden Hogge Elem.:  June 4th and 5th, 6:00-6:30 p.m.


Kindergarten Academy:  A summer program for incoming Kindergarten students to learn routines/procedures and practice readiness skills.

        Clearfield Elementary:  July 26th and 27th, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

        McBrayer Elementary:  July 27th and 30th, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

        Rodburn Elementary K Kamp:  August 1st & 2nd, 9:00-11:30 a.m.

        Tilden Hogge Elem. Jumpstart:  July 23rd & 24th, 9:00-11:00 a.m.


Readifest:  Friday, August 3rd, 9:00-11:30 a.m. at RCSHS gym


First Day of School:  Thursday, August 9th


Kindergarten Readiness Skills



Read numbers 0-5

Rote count numbers  to 10

Sort objects by shape and color

Name uppercase letters

Point to words and pictures in a story

Sit and listen to a story being read to you

Count objects in groups up to 10

Find the title on a book

Write numbers 0-5

Point to the front cover and the back cover of a book


Hold a book the correct way

Name the letters in your first name

Talk about a story that is read to you


See below for questions to ask.

Name shapes:  circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and diamond

Hold scissors correctly: thumb on top in smaller hole, index and middle fingers in larger hole on the bottom

Build fine motor skills:  tear paper, zip baggies, string beads, peel stickers, open paper milk cartons, play with playdough, etc.

Hold a pencil using a pinch grasp and trace letters

Snip paper edges and cut on lines with scissors

Know that words in a book go from the left to the right and from the top to the bottom

Print your first name using a capital letter for the first letter




Questions to ask your child when you are reading a story to them.


  • Could this story be true? Why or why not?


  • What is the story about?


  • What do you know about______?


  • What do you think might happen next?


  • Who was the story about?


  • Where does the story happen?


  • When does the story happen?


  • Was there a problem or did something go wrong?


  • How was the problem fixed?
