Just a short synopsis of our days…

Rules and Procedures: A very important part of the first few weeks of school. We learn them, practice them and repeat. The rules are written on posters in the front of the room. I stress Rule #1 (Listen Carefully) as the one that covers basically all aspects of our day. I would really appreciate it if you’d also stress that rule at home. The favorite set of rules for them to practice is the Playground Rules. However, we only get to practice those if the others are well-learned. As part of their homework during these first couple of weeks you have (hopefully) been reviewing their Navigator guide with them. This is sooooo important. Many of the questions you have about how the school and classroom run will be answered on these pages. I’m hoping, as you go over our Common Area Procedures part, you will ask them to model how to follow it.

All those papers!!! Please don’t be overwhelmed by all of the papers coming home to be signed. Try to get them in as soon as possible, however, be sure you read them carefully first. I already have all of the registration papers!!! Woo Hoo!! The next important one is the pink Health Consent and then the White Home- School Learning Compact. The Home-School Learning Compact is the one that you need to read so that you will know what to expect from school personnel and what we expect from you. There were two brochures that came with it. At the end of the year there is always a survey that comes home that asks if you’ve seen this and a lot of parents put ‘No’ even though they’ve sent back a signed copy, so… this is it, your opportunity to read it.
Snack:
Students may bring snacks daily for recess time. PLEASE look at the number of carbs in your child’s snack an drink and think about the fact that if they hit a sugar low in the afternoon, they’re going to miss out on important instruction.
Also, I would love for every student to keep a water bottle at their desk so that we all stay hydrated, it makes a huge difference in attention span, hunger, headaches, etc. Just be sure it closes completely.

FYI
When students arrive at school, they need to go directly to breakfast or to the gym (if they are not eating breakfast). Teachers will pick students up from the gym each morning. Our classroom door is closed until the students are picked up from the gym.
We had a great first days back! I'm even more excited about the school year than I was before we started.
Thank you all so much for getting the Wish List items and all of the supplies. I really appreciate it. You've been wonderful.
Not sure if this is complete, but I’m out of time.

This will be the first of many weekly newsletters that you can expect from me. Each Friday, your child should bring home in his or her newsletter to let you know what is going on in our classroom and at our school. You can also find information on my website: go to Rowan County’s District Web Page: www.rowan.kyschools.us. From there, click on McBrayer under “schools.” Then, you will find a link to teacher web pages. They are listed in alphabetical order.
To tell you a little about myself, this will be my 11th year teaching in Rowan County. I have taught kindergarten through second grade and absolutely love this age group so much! I received my bachelor’s, master’s, and Rank 1 from Morehead State University in Elementary Education with a special endorsement in reading and writing. I have three sons: Jared, Josh, and Jaxon. I am so very proud of them.

I have lots to share with you today since it’s the beginning of a new school year. This will not cover it all, but will be a good start! Here is some information that will be helpful to you regarding our classroom and school routines.

Beginning/Ending Times:
School will begin at 8:10, with the tardy bell ringing at 8:15 am each day.
School will dismiss at 3:10 each day, with pick-up at 3:15pm.

Dropping off/Picking Up:
Please use front entrance, not the bus loop to drop your child off in the mornings. You can pull up to the front, or park in a parking spot and walk your child in the building. Breakfast will be served beginning at 7:20am. If your child does not need to eat breakfast, or when finishing breakfast, he or she should go to the gym and sit in the bleachers under the sign with my name. I will pick up my class each morning and walk them to the room.
If you are picking up your child in the afternoon, you will need to do so in the gym. Please be prepared to show identification when signing your child out with myself or an instructional assistant.

Your Child’s Belongings:
Please write your child’s first and last name on his or her backpack, lunch box, clothing, etc. I will put labels on your child’s Navigator Guide (agenda book), folders, journals, etc. with his or her name.

Navigator Guides:
Your child will have his or her own Navigator Guide (agenda book). This will be used to write down spelling works, special events, homework, etc. Your child will draw one of four circles each day as well, to indicate his or her token color. Please take time each night to initial on the current day’s page. If you would like, you can also drop me a note about any concerns or questions you may have.

Paperwork!
If you have not completed a current registration form, please do so and return that ASAP in your child’s folder. You should also receive the following paperwork on the first day of school or in the very near future:
·         The Discipline Code Handbook: two places require your signature. Please tear this page out and sign front and back.
·         A current health unit form
·         Media/Web page release
·         A free/reduced lunch form
·         Lots of other forms! J As I get them, I will pass them along. Please check your child’s backpack and/or binder each night.
Snack:
We have a very early lunch time. I will most likely hear bellies growling late in the afternoons! Please send a healthy snack for your child each day. If you would like to donate snacks to our class, we would very much appreciate it, for those who may forget!

Spelling Homework:
Your child will have spelling homework each week (starting with our first group of words).

Reading Homework:
Your child should participate in a reading activity for 15-20 minutes each night Monday-Thursday. This can be done a variety of ways:
·         Listening to you read aloud
·         Echo reading (hearing what you read back to you)
·         Choral reading (reading along with you)
·         Reading aloud to you, to a sibling, to a pet, to a stuffed animal, etc.
·         Silent reading
·         Reading Dolch words on flash cards, etc.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, your child should bring home his or her reading books to practice our story of the week.

Behavior:
We will use the token system in our classroom to reinforce behavior and to give consequences to not-so-positive behavior. Your child will start out with a green token every day. Yellow will be a warning, blue will be a second warning, and red will be a final warning. For each token a student loses, he or she will need to walk three laps before playing at recess and think about ways to get a student back on track. If a child loses his or her tokens, he or she will need to bring a note home to be signed and possibly talk with Mrs. Banks. Students will color a circle in their Navigator Guides each day to indicate what color their toke was at the end of the day. Please comment back if you have any questions.
I will be looking to “catch” students being good as well. Students may put “Caught Being Good” slips into a pocket chart with their name for positive behavior. When they have 5, they may visit the treasure chest.

Very Important:
            Bus Changes/ Changes in Pick-up:
Please make every effort to inform me of any bus or pick-up changes in writing. You may send a note in your child’s folder or Navigator Guide, or email me before 2:00 that day. If I do not send a quick response to you, assume that I did not receive your message, and please call the office. It could be that I am absent, email is not working, or I did not get to check my email, etc.

Next Week’s Story - Quilt Story
Comprehension Skill- Compare and Contrast
Strategy-Story Structure and Word Structure
Class Quilt- We will be creating a class quilt; your children are very excited about this activity! J
Spelling:
Spelling List attached
There will be no spelling this week due to a short week. We will review our prefix and suffix words through poetry.
Due to the short week, we did not do spelling test this week, students will have the same least of phonics skills that I sent home last we. We completed all Language Arts assessments for Unit 3. J
Attached is an activity sheet that students may choose for their spelling homework Monday - Thursday.
Science:
We will be looking at magnets and focusing on push and pull.

**100th Day of School: Wednesday January 25th!! **
We are quickly approaching our 100th day of school. We will spend the 100th day at school working on educational activities that focus on the number 100. If you and your child would like to create a 100th day project or presentation, please feel free to do so. Students may present their activity on the 100th day. Ideas may include a poster of 100 of their favorite things using magazine cutouts, writing 100 spelling words we've had, write your name in cursive 100 times, completing 100 math problems, etc. Make this a fun family event. :)
Helping Hands- Our classroom supplies are very slim…If you could donate a few packs of lined paper and pencils that would be great. Your children also need another writing journal. Most of them are almost full! We do lots of writing! J Thank you for all of your support!
Have a great weekend!
